Developing Cane Supply and Harvesting Schedules That Enhance Whole Industry Profitability

چکیده

scheduling arrangements can potentially enhance whole An important question for sugar industries worldwide is, "What opportunities exist for modified cane supply and harvest scheduling arrangements to enhance whole industry profitability and competitiveness?" This is a complex issue, especially with vertical and horizontal expansion in production where consideration of crushing capacity and harvest season length are necessary. Given this complexity and the need to consider on-farm consequences on productivity and off-farm constraints related to transport, milling and storage capacity, this paper outlines a research approach to assess the consequences of different harvest scheduling options that integrate across the industry value chain. The approach has two key features: (i) multidisciplinary research integrating database technology, field experimentation, crop growth simulation modelling and operations research; and (ii) strong participation from industry (growers and millers) at all stages of the research process from initiation to delivery. Through case studies for several locations in the Australian sugar industry, it is shown that manipulation of cane supply scheduling offers the potential to substantially increase mill region net revenue by taking into account spatial and temporal variation in cane yield parameters.

Towards farming-systems change from value-chain optimisation in the Australian sugar industry

The supply chain of the conventional Australian sugar industry is characterized by horizontal separation between the stages. Often antagonistic relations between segments, particularly farmers and millers, led to each developing their systems for their own segment’s benefit, without reference to the wider industry interests. Cane growing developed into a monoculture, reliant on material inputs ...

Improving Competitiveness of the Australian Sugar Industry by Analysing Cane Supply Arrangements across the Value Chain

The term “value chain” describes the collection of activities that are performed to design, produce, market, deliver and support a product. The Australian sugar industry value chain has a number of distinct stages involved in the transformation of the cane crop into raw and refined sugar and other manufactured products. These stages include production, processing and distribution functions. Des...

A System for Whole Stick Cane Harvesting:

Arguments are presented favouring the step-wise introduction of mechanisation into cane harvesting. The multi-pass "McConnel" system of whole stick harvesting offers such a phased introduction. Three machines are introduced in the following order as labour becomes scarcer a versatile loader, a reaping aid which leaves the cane in orderly swaths "inline", and a pickup cleaner-bundler which takes...

The Composition of Sugarcane Juices Derived from Burnt Cane and Whole Green Cane Crop

THERE HAS been substantial interest within the Australian sugar industry in product diversification as a means to reduce its exposure to fluctuating raw sugar prices and in order to increase its commercial viability. In particular, the industry is looking at fibrous residues from sugarcane harvesting (trash) and from sugarcane milling (bagasse) for cogeneration and the production of biocommodit...
